A Mormon acquaintance once pushed Mark Twain into an argument on the issue of polygamy. After long and tedious expositions justifying the practice, the Mormon demanded that Twain cite any passage of scripture expressly forbidding polygamy.

"Nothing easier," Twain replied. "No man can serve two masters."

I didn't get it, but I am a Mormon and it sounded like Marky was insulting me!

"No man can serve two masters" is the Bible verse. Essentially 'Mark Twain' is saying that women run marriages and are in essence their husbands' "masters". Therefore, because the verse says no man can serve two masters, a man cannot have two wives because he would have two 'masters', whose orders (demands, requests, desires, etc) would be in conflict. So to serve (or satisfy, or make happy) one, he would have to ignore the wishes of the other. If you remember that the Mormon church practiced polygamy in Twain's lifetime (which the entire joke is predicated on), it is not in anyway anti-mormon. Whether it is misogynist is a completely different subject, though.

Ok, my dad explained it to me. We don't have more than one wife anymore, and Joseph Smith had to for a special reason.
